Frequently Asked Questions
Q.How do we marry legally in Thailand?
A. Marry Me Thailand can take you through all the steps or you can arrange by yourself; either way you and your partner will need to prepare some documents (listed below) and will need to be in Thailand 3-5 days before the wedding to finalise the paperwork.
Q.What sort of documents will be needed and should we bring originals or will copies do?
A. You will need both copies and originals and do ensure you have your own personal copies in a separate bag just in case!
The following documents are required:
- 30 day tourist visa
- Valid 10 year passport
- Full birth certificate
- Decree absolute (if applicable)
- Death certificate (if you are a widow/widower)
- Change of name deed (if applicable)
- Adoption certificate (if applicable)
- Additional passport photos
- Certified letter or documents from your embassy indicating you wish to get married in Thailand with your personal details (name and address, parent’s names and nationality). These are obtained in Bangkok
- All of these documents should then be translated into Thai and endorsed by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs which is located in Bangkok – see next question for more details.
Q.So, we need to visit Bangkok for the legal process?
A. Yes. You and your partner will need to visit the embassy of your home country with documents prior to translation to declare you are both single and free to marry. Following translation of the documents you will need to return to the embassy for them to notarised by a consulate official. Officials at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will authenticate the documents before issuing a marriage license which allows you to marry in any district office.
Q.How long will we need to stay in Bangkok for?
A. You stay will usually only be one or two nights. You will need to check the dates as embassies are closed for public holidays.
Q.This sounds like a lot to do. Can Marry Me Thailand help?
A. Yes we can! The process we offer is as follows:
- You and your partner should review the document checklist above and prepare all of the required documentation excluding the certified embassy letter and pack safely in your hand luggage before you depart
- Marry Me Thailand will advise you of when to arrive in Bangkok (usually two to three days prior to your planned wedding) and be prepared for a one or two nights stay. Remember all embassies close during Thai holidays or the holidays of your home country
- We will check and then help endorse your marital status with a visit to your country’s embassy arranged by a Marry Me Thailand representative where you will need to bring the passports, copies and x2 photos per person. Additionally if either of you have been divorced or widowed you will also need to bring supporting documentation
- The embassy will need 1-2 days to process your documents following which The Marry Me Thailand representative will meet you in Bangkok to collect the statements, which will now have been endorsed and stamped by your embassy consular. If you wish to appoint Marry Me Thailand as your power of attorney then we can collect the documents on your behalf
- The Marry Me Thailand representative will then take the documents for translation before delivering then to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for endorsement. This process only takes one day
- Our representative will then courier the documents direct to the district office in the area which you are marrying. The district office will need one day to ensure the documents are in order before attending your wedding
- At your wedding the district office representative will ask you to state your names, professions and perhaps another simple question before delivering your marriage certificate for you both to endorse. Once signed you and your partner are legally married under Thai law
- Marry Me Thailand can then arrange for the marriage certificate to be translated into English
Please contact us for a price for this service which will include any fees required by officials and all translation services.
Q.How far in advance do we need to plan our wedding?
A. As soon as your decision to marry in Thailand is made. For some of the more popular destinations we are taking bookings two years in advance! Marry Me Thailand recommends that you send out your ‘save the date’ flyer to guests as soon as possible. This is very important for an overseas wedding as it will allow guests to save up and allocate some time to attend.
Q.Will my civil wedding ceremony in Thailand be legally recognised in my home country?
A. Yes. However do ensure you keep multiple copies of all documentation as you may find it difficult to easily get replacements should you loose the original when you return home.
Q.Is there a minimum age to marry in Thailand?
A. The minimum age is 20 years without parental consent or 18 years with parental consent.
Q.What are the wedding venue options?
A. From beaches, gardens, Buddhist temples, resorts, waterfalls and more. The list of where you can wed in Thailand is very flexible. However only a Civil Ceremony that has been registered with the registrar at the district office will be ‘legal’. Marry Me Thailand wedding services work to ensure that your wedding is both one to remember and legally recognised.
Q.When is the best time of the year to marry?
A. Thailand is a hot tropical country and the weather varies only by a few degrees throughout the year. However certain areas such as Phuket Island are affected by rain anytime from April through to October. The weather gets hotter leading up to the rainy season with March and April usually being very hot months so you may wish to avoid this intensity. During rainy season it is rare to rain all day, usually heavy downpours last a short amount of time.
Q.What considerations should we make for the heat?
A. Guests should be advised to wear light loose fitting clothing made of lightweight fabrics. If marrying in a temple then please note that females must cover their shoulders and dress more demurely. For beach weddings guests and couples should also pack some talcum powder which Thai’s use daily in hot weather.
